The Meaning of Life
In the last few months, God has laid on my heart the story about Mary and Martha. I believe that there is a powerful
message God has for His children from that story. We read below:
Luke 10:38-42
(38) Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
(39) And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word.
(40) But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
(41) And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
(42) But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
A few days after I read and studied this scripture, our
Pastor preached using this same story. I asked God what He wanted to get across
to me. What I understood from this story is what I write to share with you.
Dear Christian brother or sister reading this, I want you to
pause and reflect on the meaning of your life. First, ask yourself this
question, "Why am I here?" Next, as you ponder on the life you have
lived so far ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you what your life's purpose is.
Let me point out that it is only when you find the purpose of your life that
you can appreciate the meaning of life. The sad truth is that many Christians
have no clue about why they are here. It is unfortunate that many Christians
leave this earth without accomplishing or even knowing the purpose of their
lives. Time is of the essence of knowing and accomplishing God's purpose for
your life. If you are reading this today, then I believe that God is
challenging you either to seek Him to know His purpose for your life or to set
out to fully accomplish His purpose for your life.
The story we read in Luke 10:38-42 begs the following
question for the believer in Christ: Are you are a Mary or a Martha? Your
answer to this question is important because knowing which of the two characters
you are is essential if you are seeking to accomplish God's purpose for your
life. Bear in mind that Mary and Martha are two sisters, both of whom believed
in Christ. And the story reveals two important issues about service. The first relates to some believers that take on service to the extent of
losing sight of what is important, which is a relationship with the Master, our Savior. The
problem with this attitude leads to the second issue which is exhaustion to the
point of giving up on the purpose of your life. In vs. 42, Jesus said:
"But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which
shall not be taken away from her." This statement by Jesus points to the
fact that having a relationship with him, which involves feeding on his word
and seeking him through worship and prayer, is the basis for accomplishing
God's purpose for our lives. Without a true relationship with Christ, service
fails to bring true fulfillment and could become an exercise in futility.
Receiving fulfillment in service comes only when one has a deep relationship
with Christ. You become fulfilled because your service will flow out of a heart
filled with contentment and gratitude and an understanding of the true purpose
of your service. Don't get me wrong. Service is important in our Christian
walk but service without a deep relationship with the Master you are serving
can lead to missing the true meaning of being a Christ-follower. In essence, a
relationship with Christ becomes a necessary condition for service to God.
May I submit to you that our Master, the Lord Jesus Christ,
calls us to fellowship and it is in this fellowship that we can find our true
purpose and the meaning of life. Without Christ at the center of all that we
do, we will only get frustrated at every turn in our lives. For Christ to be at
the center of all that we do, we need a deeper relationship with him. As we enter
2020, let us commit to developing a deeper relationship with Christ. This will
enable us to understand and accomplish God's purpose for our lives and in so
doing, enable us to find the true meaning of life.
Happy New Year to everyone! May God bless and keep us
throughout 2020!
